Pen and Stu

Welcome to Folkscape's Artist of the Month, where we spotlight the exceptional talents shaping the contemporary folk music landscape. This month, we are delighted to feature the acoustic duo from York, Pen and Stu, whose melodic storytelling and distinctive sound have carved a unique niche within the folk community.

Pen and Stu blend the resonant charm of tenor guitars with the sonorous melodies of BIG whistles, crafting an original contemporary folk sound that resonates with both purists and modern listeners. Their music is a journey through time, encapsulating tales of historical figures, folklore legends, and seafaring tales of pirate queens, all delivered with a heartfelt authenticity and nuanced artistry.

Since their collaboration began in 2014, Pen and Stu have become a staple on the folk music circuit, gracing stages at renowned festivals such as the Filey Folk Festival, Alston Live, and the Whitby Pirate Festival, among others. Their performances are not just concerts; they are immersive experiences where audiences are transported into the narratives woven into each song.

Their debut album, "So Far...Songs of Love, Loss, and Pirates," released in March 2017, was met with acclaim, earning nationwide radio airplay and praise from critics and fans alike. BBC Introducing North Yorkshire lauded their track "No Time to Love Me" as a "cracking song," highlighting the duo's knack for capturing the essence of folk storytelling.

As full-time musicians, Pen and Stu are dedicated to their craft, continuously evolving their sound while staying true to the roots of folk music. Their upcoming album, set to release in January 2024, is eagerly anticipated by their growing fan base, promising new stories set to their signature blend of lyrical depth and musical innovation.
