Nettlebed Folk Club began in July 1975, founded by folk song enthusiasts from Maidenhead, Berkshire, when a local pub tenant moved to the Bull Inn in Nettlebed, near Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire. Starting in a small 40-person bar, the club moved to a converted coaching barn, accommodating over 100, and became a key folk circuit venue.
In 1990, after Brakspear’s brewery closed the Bull, the Village Club invited the folk club to relocate, expanding capacity to 200. Run by volunteers, this non-profit features traditional and contemporary music from the British Isles and beyond, hosting most major folk acts.
Notable for instigating special shows like 'Feast of Fiddles,' led by Hugh Crabtree featuring six top fiddlers and an electric back line. The club also appeared in 'Midsomer Murders,' providing over 100 performers and extras for 'The Ballad of Midsomer County.' This led to a CD by 'The Nettlebed Collective,' featuring Seth Lakeman, Lucie Jones, and others.
Recognized as a well known UK folk venue, BBC’s Mark Radcliffe and patron Phil Beer of Show of Hands have praised it highly. The club also won the BBC Radio 2 Folk Club of the Year Award. Beginning life as a trio - with legendary Steeleye Span fiddle player Peter Knight being joined by percussionist Sacha Trochet and guitarist Roger Flack - the line-up has been expanded to form the Gigspanner Big Band, with acclaimed multi-instrumental duo Edgelarks (Phillip Henry and Hannah Martin - BBC Folk Awards 'Best Duo') and Bellowhead co-founder and melodeon player extraordinaire, John Spiers, joining the fray.
While Peter Knight, as part of Steeleye Span’s classic 1970s line-up, helped invent a brand of folk rock that is still influential today, John Spiers, has had an equally profound impact on the landscape of traditional music over the last two decades.
Characterised by riotous inventiveness, technically gifted individual playing and subtle collaborative interaction, this coming together of several of the biggest names on the folk-roots scene, combines a deep knowledge of roots traditions with a ceaselessly boundary pushing approach.

Daphne’s Flight was formed 25 years ago by five distinguished singer songwriters, Chris While, Julie Matthews, Melanie Harrold, Helen Watson, and Christine Collister, now joined by Miranda Sykes. Renowned as one of the most captivating vocal ensembles in acoustic music, their dynamic stage presence is matched by their exceptional talents as singers, musicians, and composers, placing them in a league of their own.
Envision a fusion of The Travelling Wilburys’ instrumental brilliance and songwriting prowess, the powerful vocal harmonies of Sweet Honey In The Rock, and the heartfelt, relatable charm reminiscent of The Derry Girls. Bellowhead changed the face of British folk when they exploded onto the scene in 2004. With their high-energy performances, bold arrangements, and sheer musical brilliance, they became one of the most electrifying live bands in the UK. Over the years, they played to hundreds of thousands of fans, released five acclaimed studio albums, and earned two silver discs alongside eight BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.
